“It feels like he’s the photo negative”

Kansas City Chiefs‘ Patrick Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since being drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Anytime a quarterback is compared to a player of Mahomes’ caliber, it would be a good thing.

However, one analyst thinks that the New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is a parody version of Mahomes.

Former NFL defensive back and current analyst Domonique Foxworth spoke with Mina Kimes on The Mina Kimes Show and compared Zach Wilson to a fake version of Patrick Mahomes.

Foxworth said that while he may have a similar playing style to Mahomes – spinning and throwing the ball at different angles – the difference is, Mahomes is effective with that style of play.

“It feels like he’s the photo negative of Patrick Mahomes because he does all the Mahomesian buy-time things. [He] is spinning, he’s cutting, dodging, changes arm angle, except the Chiefs fans are excited when Mahomes does it and the opponent’s fans are excited when Zach Wilson does it because it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s about to be a big play for us. He’s shaking all the defensive tackles. Get excited, guys.'”

Many people compared Wilson’s style of play to Mahomes’, such as former wide receiver Chad Johnson, Bleacher Report, and other media outlets. Through one-and-a-half seasons in the NFL, Wilson is anything but close to being compared to Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes has been in the NFL since 2017, but didn’t start until the 2018 season. Zach Wilson was drafted as the second-overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and played in 13 games as a rookie while missing three games thus far.

In Mahomes’ first season as a full-time starter, he won the league MVP by throwing over 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards. The next season, he won Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers.

In Wilson’s rookie season, he went 3-10 as a starter, completing only 55.6 percent of passes for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. In eight games played this season, he’s 4-1 as a starter but has struggled, completing 54.9 percent of passes, with three touchdowns and five interceptions.

It’s still early on in Wilson’s career, but he is currently well below the level of an established star like Mahomes.
