Why Hailee Steinfeld Isn’t Returning For Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts

There was no Hailee Steinfeld in Transformers Rise of the Beasts as Charlie Watson despite her starring in Bumblebee. The continuation of Bumblebee and Optimus Prime’s story in the franchise comes several years after they were last seen in Bumblebee. In that film, taking place before any other Transformers live-action movie, Hailee’s Charlie found Bumblebee and the two worked together to save the day. It was not only a Transformers movie, but also a coming-of-age story for Charlie, a girl and her first car.

The 2018 film was a prequel to Michael Bay’s Transformers movies and served as a soft reboot of the franchise for Paramount. Since the Bumblebee origin story was set in 1987, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts acts as the sequel to Bumblebee. The film’s placement in the timeline explains why former franchise leads Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) are not returning. The story could technically see Hailee Steinfeld in Transformers Rise of the Beasts, but there is a good reason she didn’t appear.

Hailee Steinfeld’s Charlie & Bee Went Separate Ways In Bumblebee

Hailee Steinfeld and Bee in Bumblebee movie

The reason there is no Hailee Steinfeld in Transformers Rise of the Beasts is because of Bumblebee‘s ending. The entire movie revolved around Charlie and Bumblebee’s relationship and the friendship that is created between them. While they work together to save the world in the end, Bumblebee also wrapped up its story by sending the potential new franchise lead and the iconic yellow car in separate ways. This was because Charlie needed to stay with her family and friends, while Bumblebee needs to start his mission to regroup with the Autobots.

With Bumblebee providing a very clear break between Charlie and Bumblebee’s time together, it makes sense why Hailee Steinfeld did not return in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. As great as it might have been to see the rising star come back, it would alter the emotional impact of Bumblebee‘s ending. The two characters had a profound impact on each other in their short time together, but Charlie is not put in a position where she would have to remain involved in future Transformers films.

Will Hailee Steinfeld Return In A Future Transformers Movie?

Hailee Steinfeld and Bumblebee

The absence of Hailee Steinfeld in Transformers Rise of the Beasts does not mean audiences will never see her again. Paramount was developing Bumblebee 2 at one point, which could have included Hailee Steinfeld’s return. This indicates there is some interest in continuing Charlie’s story as part of the larger franchise if the right story can be found. Development on the Bumblebee sequel slowed in recent years as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts took priority. That could mean Hailee Steinfeld will never return to Transformers, especially if her duties in the Marvel Cinematic Universe keep her busy.

As long as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts launches a new trilogy as intended, hope could remain alive for Charlie Watson and Bumblebee to have a reunion. The franchise could return to San Francisco at a later point or see Charlie chase down the Autobots by following them to New York. It is even possible that a future villain will look to hurt those closest to the Autobots, which could mean Bumblebee needs to protect his former human companion from danger. There are plenty of story reasons why Hailee Steinfeld’s Transformers return can happen in the future.

Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts Has New Human Characters

Anthony Ramos as Noah and Mirage in Transformers 7.

The Transformers franchise continued to cycle through franchise-leading human characters with its seventh entry. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts continues the franchise in a 1994 setting that features Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the main human actors. They are joined by new Transformers factions in the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons, but some familiarity will remain thanks to Optimus Prime and Bumblebee still leading the Autobots. Ramos plays Noah, an ex-military electronics expert who gets involved with the Autobots when he tries to steal a car that turned out to be Mirage.

It is a very different role than the one that Steinfeld or Shia LeBeouf played. They were two young adults who received the cars as a coming-of-age styled tale. Instead, Noah was down on his luck and went from a car thief to a hero fighting alongside the Autobots. Unlike Noah, FIshback’s Elena is an artifact researcher who ends up by Noah’s side after the Autobots sent him in to steal a key needed for them to return to Cybertron to battle Unicron, making these new human companions a much more integral part of the war, really explaining why there was no reason to have Hailee Steinfeld in Transformers Rise of the Beasts.
