Will John Wick: Chapter 4 Be The End?

Keanu Reeves looking serious in the John Wick trailer

The new John Wick: Chapter 4 poster continues the film’s marketing trend of hinting that the action sequel could be the end of the road for Reeves’ titular assassin. The story’s indication that John facing off against Skarsgård’s Marquis de Gramont is his last avenue to stop the High Table’s pursuit of retribution for his killing of Santino on Continental grounds in John Wick: Chapter 2. Considering how stacked the odds have been against Wick through the previous three John Wick movies, his ongoing survival could easily see him come out John Wick: Chapter 4 ready for whatever the future holds for him.

Despite both the new John Wick: Chapter 4 poster and recent trailer hinting that the film could be the end for Reeves’ protagonist, both the actor himself and Lionsgate seem far from ready to retire him. The pandemic saw the studio both confirm that a John Wick 5 was in the works and would film back-to-back with its predecessor, as well as elect to postpone this plan while moving away with the fourth film first following production delays due to Reeves’ commitment to The Matrix Resurrections. Reeves himself has frequently expressed an interest in continuing to play the character indefinitely, as long as the John Wick movies continue to be successful.

The biggest sign of a promising future for the franchise after John Wick: Chapter 4 is the in-production spinoff, Ballerina, led by Ana de Armas. Acting as the second major spinoff for the action franchise alongside the prequel show The Continental, the film is confirmed to see the returns of Reeves, McShane, Anjelica Huston and Lance Reddick. Without a confirmation on where the film sits in the John Wick timeline, it will be interesting to see if Reeves comes out the other side of the next film alive to appear in Ballerina. Only time will tell when John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters on March 24.
